The service at Felixstowe docks is getting worse. Container lorries are kept on average six hours at a time. "The line is closed, we are doing a ship" is the main excuse. On Trinity Terminal there are 33 lanes.
The wages I pay myself work out at 80p per hour because of the waiting time, and very few drivers can keep their tacho charts correct because they have to give up their nightly rest to keep moving up in the queue. When you ring the foreman's office to complain, they tell you to wait your turn, or we are doing all we can, or to clear off.
The management could not care less about keeping drivers waiting.
The facilities for drivers visiting the dock are deplorable, for example toilets, places to get cleaned up and canteens are inadequate—one washbasin has to do for about 600 drivers! John Beckett,
