Qinetiq's tilt test facility near Chertsey was the venue for the test.
It was witnessed by representatives of the IRTE, currently reviewing its guidelines for tipper stability, and Edbro, makers of the tipping gear.
Also represented was Lafarge, the operator largely responsible for the current upsurge in Interest in the subject, due to Its requirement that trailers achieve the IRTE Category A test requirement (7° tilt
angle) before being allowed onto Its fleet, or its sites.
The trailer was a Fruehauf 40yd3 aggregate, fitted with Edbro front gear and ROR F19000NII air suspension and ROR 9510LM drum-braked axles on Continental HTR tyres.
The 6,000kg tare trailer was hooked up to a 6x2 Renault Premium and ballasted with 29,750kg of granite dust to give a 44-tonne GVW. As is normal on these tests, the top of the load was boxed in to prevent shifting during the process.
