ACOMMITTEE of Inquiry to report on the financial and administrative position of its bus undertaking is to be set up by Luton Town Council. The transport department has an accumulated loss of about £60,000 and, it is reported, will be operating at an estimated annual deficiency of 116,000.
The chairman of the committee, Cllr. H. F. Outen, has hinted that an increase in fares might be sought. The recent wage award to busmen will cost the undertaking about £10,000 a year, he said, RETURN LOADS ON JOB PERMITS JAULIERS who obtain job permits 1 from the Road Haulage Executive should instruct drivers that when they have finished a delivery, they should call in at the nearest R.H.E, depot and ask for an endorsement of the permit so that a return load may be obtained.
This advice is contained in the latest bulletin of the Metropolitan and Southeastern Area of the Road Haulage Association. It is assumed that the driver would try to seek a return load or that the R.H.E. might even give him one.
REAR ENTRANCES: NO DANGER A RESOLUTION urging that all Inbuses should have rear entrances was defeated, last week, at a meeting of the West Riding of Yorkshire Accident Prevention Federation of the Royal
Society for the Prevention of Accidents. The chairman explained that the general purposes committee had recommended thnt no action be taken on the resolution, because of the absence of reports concerning accidents arising out of the position of bus entrances. In addition, on some types of vehicle it was impracticable to have a rear entrance.
