THE DEPARTMENT for Transport (D1T) is to advise local authorities on how to limit speeds on country roads.
The latest guidance notes are being issued this month; last December the Di" told local authorities to review their speed limits on A and B roads by 2011.
DI] spokesman Scot Marchbank explains: "We have some guidance that we're going to ask the local authorities to comment on with respect to how they go about setting the speed limit."
He adds that the review looked at raising speed limits that are too low as well as cutting limits that are too high: "We wanted local authorities to know that their own speed limits are appropriate and people can also be satisfied the speed limit is appropriate for the road.
"We're always trying to look at and improve road safety — and trying to improve it."
Lobby groups and even insurance companies have called for the hOmph national speed limit for single-track roads to be cut to 40mph on some country roads,
