IF E \ ER evidence were needed that the early Atkinsons were remarkable vehicles, it was captured in the photo used in the piece about Foden and Seddon Atkinson (CM 27 July).
You applaud the long life of the red Borderer originally bought for Wishech Roadways and now owned by Terry Godbold of Metfield, near Diss, Norfolk, claiming it was running at 20 years old. That would see it retiring in the mid-1990s — but in fact that vehicle is still running now, fully taxed and working.
As someone who runs a 1990 Foden 4000 Series, and has been in haulage for 42 years, I'm very sad that these marques are gone. It is clearly a question of economics and we all understand that. But it is still profoundly disappointing that Foden and Seddon Atkinson are no more.
They produced wonderful, commendable vehicles— and we will be lucky if manufacturers in the future achieve such quality.
