Operators are turning away from curtainsiders to boxvans in an attempt to improve security. Steve Banner finds out more.
Security fears may be causing some operators to switch to box-bodied rigids rather than use curtainsiders."We're finding we're selling a lot of 7.5-tonners with GRP box bodies at present,probably to own-account operators in the main," says Paul Banks of Mercedes dealership Truckworld.
Phil Holmes of Scania dealership Keltruck reports: -Demand for 18-tonne boxvans is stronger than it used to be. and it's possible that security is an issue. It used to be the case that if we took back 10 18tonners with box bodies, we'd take the boxes off six or seven and fit a different type of body. We don't have to these days.
"Nor, so far as lean see, is it the case that we can sell 18-tonne boxes more easily now because there aren't so many about," he adds. "There seem to be just as many around as there have always been."
And George Alexander of Glass's Guide concludes: "At 18 tonnes though it is still very much quality that determines how well stock sells.•
