THE Government has no current plans to re-introduce the Seat Belts Bill.
"I believe that Parliament will eventually endorse the compulsory wearing of seat belts, but I cannot say when legislation may be possible", said Mr William Rodgers, the Transport Secretary, in the Commons last week.
In the last session there was probably the worst of , all worlds — a Government Bill with a free vote, observed the Minister.
The right course now was probably a short pause to enable the Government to devise the best means of ensuring that any future legislation would pass through all its stages.
Meanwhile, it was right to encourage the voluntary wearing of seat belts. He had approved a new advertising campaign, which he hoped would have that result.
