• French farmers attacked and disabled a British truck near Lyons, only to find it was carrying 20 tonnes of Golden Delicious apples grown in France. The farmers, protesting about British imports, ambushed the Davex Transport vehicle after it had been loaded up at Lyons.
"They cut the truck's airlines to its brakes, and then dragged the driver from the cab," says Peter Davis, Davex's managing director at the company's offices at Louth, Lincs. "But when they opened the back up, they discovered it was full of French apples. Fortunately, the driver was able to telephone us here, and we were able to get him back on the road the next clay. We are fed up with these people — they're unbelievable. This is the second time this has happened."
The French farmers are also protesting against the recent EC-United States GATT international trade deal.
