Why single out these hauliers?

THERE'S nowt so queer as folk — or governments, it seems.
What are we to make of the Government's sanctions against companies that have broken the Pay Code? As CM went to press, five haulage operators were believed to be on the Government's blacklist of around 24 companies.
The operators named so far are presumably the tip of the iceberg; there could be a cold wind in the West Midlands, where 1,700 hauliers negotiated a 15 per cent pay increase with drivers. Since the increase was agreed last year hundreds of these must have been undertaking jobs for the State — think of the number of hauls needed by nationalised industries and local government, never mind those firms in which the National Enterprise Board has a stake.
This is where we must sympathise with the aggrieved feelings of those on the blacklist. "Why me?" they say. Why indeed? _ There must be better ways to run United Kingdom Ltd. By next week we expect to hear what the Minister of Transport has to Say.
