Last year, Cheshire-based body and trailer manufacturer Cartwright Group launched its Cheetah Fastback trailer, using a wedge-shaped chassis with air-suspension axles to reduce the running height of the trailer.
The trailer was designed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), a 3D-computer technology more usually associated with aircraft and Formula One design. CFD is now the first step for most truck manufacturers too, keen to make their Euro-6 cabs as fuel-efficient as possible.
They have discovered it to be a cost-effective and less timeconsuming alternative to building models and using wind tunnels.
