II Chevron Texaco's Dave Spence says the key issues will be how much sulphated ash and phosphorous will be generated by Euro-4 engines with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) dosing systems. Cummins has already announced its strategy with its new system (CA410 April), a combined engine/after-treatment system designated I EM (Integrated Emissions Management).
It says the key to Euro-4 is optimising the combustion process so that less soot is generated in the lubrication oil. "This will enable us to significantly improve our oildrain periods over our Euro-3 products," says IEM project manager Simon Guest. "Exact mileages are yet to be determined but on certain engines and operations, it may be as high as 50%. We do not anticipate the specification of the oil required to change significantly from the Euro-3 approved oils used today. We will not be moving to synthetic base oils."
