is fined for 'buying time'
A SOUTHPORT DRIVER found guilty of repeatedly falsifying tachograph records on overnight runs to London markets has been ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £1,450.
Gerald Peet of Bond Lane, Banks, Southport pleaded guilty to 18 charges of falsification when he appeared before the Leyland magistrates.
Prosecuting for VOSA, John Heaton said the offences came to light in the course of a routine check on tachograph records belonging to Supremecause, trading as Taylor's Tiansport, of Southport. On 14 of the 18 occasions, Peet had clearly inserted a chart in the tachograph after the first 30 minutes of
driving. On the other four occasions, the distances had been even greater before the chart was inserted.
Peet had been "buying time" to try and make his record look straight, bearing in mind that he was expected to do a run from Banks to London and back overnight. He was driving a 26-tonne rigid cartying fresh produce from the Southport area to the markets in the capital. It was clear that he would have breached the drivers' hours regulations, although sometimes marginally.
However, he was offending on more than 80% of the journeys. As a result, the magistrates fined Peet £1,250 with £200 costs.
