It's never easy to launch a completely new brand into a mature market but, on the strength of this product, the Santana deserves to succeed. However, the market has changed and diversified dramatically in recent years and Land Rover faces more competition than ever in particular we've seen the rise of the Japanese-inspired 2.8-tonne pickup sector, not to mention a raft of SUV-based 4x4 commercials such as the Mitsubishi Shogun.
One thing that is encouraging about the Santana, however, is the attitude of The importer, Fourtec.
While new to selling road vehicles, its staff seem genuinely prepared to accept that a few details need fine-tuning for the UK market, and they're quite prepared to react positively to constructive criticism.
The omens for Fourtec and Santana in the UK look good. Once the manufacturer can achieve the critical mass needed to gain a foothold, we expect to see a lot more of this Spanish newcomer.
