THE FTA WARNS proposed changes to drivers' hours rules will limit Saturday morning working and affect six-day-a-week services. The proposal has been devised by the Irish government which currently holds the presidency of
the EU. UK operators may find the Irish involvement slightly ironic given its hauliers' record on tacho and hours rules.
The changes could include a minimum rest period of 45 hours every other week.
The FTA has told the Department for Transport that further hours changes are unacceptable on top of "massive losses of productivity" the WorkingTime Directive will cause. It has also submitted a briefing to the Secretary of State, Alistair Darling, which sets out the implications to UK operators if the deal goes ahead.
