I WAS HAPPY to see that the driver at Arclid Transport was completely exonerated by TC Beverley Bell. and its transport manager, Peter Conway, is completely right to point out the poor levels of driver awareness in this country (CM 3 June).
In October. new drivers will have to take a driving test that includes the new element of independent driving.
This 'loosely termed' change to the way the current driving test is conducted will see candidates asked to drive to a destination following road signs, or a verbal prompt by the instructor.
Furthermore, we are told that as a result. this new driving test may have to he extended and cost the person sitting it even more money! If the Driving Standards Agency which recently celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Driving Test can encourage a change for something so basic: why can we not have a compulsory motorway skills test, after the driving test?
I constantly see, as both a car and HG V driver, the basics of motorway driving thrown out the window! People regularly forget lane disipline and undertaking middle-lane hogs is as common as overtaking them.
If the Arclid incident has proved anything. it is the need for increased awareness on our motorways Bnan Bevis
