• British Rail's parcels arm Red Star is slashing its afternoon delivery services in a bid to stem losses and fatten up the firm for a sell-off this autumn.
The lucrative same-day and early-next-day services will be increased.
And more than 80 subcontracted hauliers will be invited to tender for the new business as the afternoon work dries up.
"Hauliers will be losing business on one hand, but making it up on the other," says a Red
Star spokesman. The early morning contracts, which are currently carried out by Roadexpress, will be up for grabs from 30 May.
Around 500 administrative and management staff will also be made redundant as part of the economy drive.
Potential Red Star buyers were put off buying the firm when it was on offer last year by Om losses on a £46m turnover,
