WELCOME BREAK, the motorway service station operator, has begun cracking down on 'boy racers' who are disturbing truck drivers' rest periods.
About 100 car drivers were ordered to leave Burtonwood Services near Warrington on the M62 last week. Company spokesman Eddie Gershon says security guards checked vehicles as they came off the motorway and two truckers used their vehicles to restrict access to the parking areas.
"It's the first time we have done this,he adds."Beforehand, theyjust turned up and drove around the car park because there was no-one on
site to stop them." He reports that the police have promised to back up any future initiatives.
The crackdown was launched after Pat Nicholson, spokesperson for the Professional Drivers Association, wrote to Welcome Break highlighting the problem.
"I pointed out that we have to park there to have our statutory rest and even if that is two minutes short, we're liable to prosecution," she says. "They have a duty of care to allow us to get our nine hours' sleep if required."
Nicholson says hordes of youths have been meeting at Burtonwood to show off their cars.
