CUSTOMS & EXCISE has shortlisted seven companies to provide the technology behind the Lorry Road User Charge (LRUC).
C&E project director Mike Shipp says the "best value" scheme will be chosen; not necessarily the cheapest. Siemens. Capita Group (the group behind the London Congestion Charge) and IBM are on the shortlist. But Capita has just been fined £4,5m for missing performance targets in London.
A C&E spokeswoman says: "At present we are on track with our deadline.We are hoping to receive a binding offer from the proposed contractor at the end of this year."
James Hookham, policy director at the FreightTransport Association says: "We obviously want a system that works.Weneedreliability,precision and ease of understanding. It would be disastrous if they repeated the German experience."
Also shortlistecl are T-Systems International, Sere°, Autostrade SpA and the Tracs Consortium.
