Ocado is another company that employs a “buddy” to coach and mentor all new starters.
Neil Shaw, fleet training manager at Ocado, told the Brake Fleet Safety conference that the buddy system is to help new drivers to the firm with on-the-job-training and day and night driving.
“We build the new drivers up slowly and give them a progressive number of drops,” he says.“The new drivers can request additional training at any time, but those deemed to be ‘high risk’ will not be permitted to drive until the in-house fleet instructors sign them off.” Shaw says Ocado’s collisions per order are reducing despite what he describes as the firm’s “incredible growth” in recent years.
