Denmark takes over the six-month rotating presidency of the EU council from Poland and has a strong domestic environmental agenda. “In their home country they’ve made a pledge to be completely carbon neutral by 2050,” says Liberal Democrat MEP Chris Davies. This chimes with the EC’s Transport White Paper, which says greenhouse gas emissions must be cut by 80%-90% below 1990 levels by 2050 and the reduction for the transport sector must be at least 60%.
Recent agreements to cut car and van emissions gives Davies conidence that such targets are achievable. “The vehicle manufacturing industry has done remarkably well. It’s ahead on the fuel eficiency trajectory. We just need to give the industry the longest possible notice.”
