NEARER HOME, the failure of the Freightliner system to maintain a daily container service between London and Paris is causing raised eyebrows. Commenced as a prestige operation during the days when Philip Shirley was the Railway Board's second-in-command in charge of Freightliners, the operation has not prospered and French Railways' proposal to allow the service to continue as such has been ruled out by the new Freightliner top brass. The reason: they do not want to add to the losses already being incurred by the Freightliner service. So container traffic is being switched to the French Rail Harwich-Dunkirk route where it will take almost a day longer in transit (and probably lose out to road-ferry operators using southern routes).
