• A United Automobile Services bus made a special half-mile detour last week to take an expectant mother to hospital. The bus was 10 miles from the end of its 60-mile journey from Newcastle upon Tyne to Carlisle. The woman got on the bus at Brampton, Cumberland, and shortly afterwards left her seat to talk to the driver, Mr Clifford Bunn, who, instead of taking his normal route through Carlisle, drove to the City Maternity Hospital where the woman was led in by nurses.
But it was all a false alarm. A hospital spokesman said later: "There was no confinement and the lady has gone home".
After his emergency ambulance duties, Mr Bunn turned his bus round and set off for home. A spokesman at the bus depot in Hexham said: "I think it was very considerate of him. He hasn't told us about the incident yet, but I'm sure the company will approve his action in the circumstances."
A passenger on the bus said: "The woman was obviously in great distress. The driver was very sympathetic—he drove the bus very gently and tried to comfort the woman".
• The new British Leyland bus plant erected at Lillyhall, Workington, West Cumberland, has started recruiting for the 300 jobs available but the first prototypes will not be completed until towards the end of the year.
