One of the biggest influences on fleet efficiency is the man behind the wheel, a pant freely acknowledged by Laffey "Our drivers and anyone else's drivers are probably key to saving fuel and improving vehicle performance."
However, having gone down the usual defensIve &tying trainer route, he reports: "We recently bought the Fleetboard product from Mercedes-Benz [CM 27 August], which will allow us to share information with our drivers and, hopefully, move to a place where we can continue to improve and make drivers aware of where they've been heavy footed, in the wrong gear or whatever answer it may be."
Laffey also stresses the importance of a two-way dialogue. He reveals: "We run an efficient operation, the drivers are briefed before they leave the site, where we try to make them aware of expected delays on route. They're also debriefed when they come back so if they've encountered delays and problems then we capture that information from them and feed it back into the plan for the next day."
