• More than 600 DFDS drivers are voting again on a 5% pay offer they have already rejected against the advice of their union.
The offer, which would increase basic pay of 1275 for a guaranteed 50-hour week by about £14, is designed to boost recruitment and counter the effects of the Working Time Directive (CM 21-27 February).
Ron Webb, Transport & General Workers Union national secretary for road transport, says less than twothirds of the drivers voted in the original ballot so the rejection was not felt to be conclusive enough.
"We felt it appropriate, along with the employer, to ensure the widest possible turn-out in the forthcoming ballot. Again, we maintain it is a reasonable offer," he adds.
Amanda Butler, DFDS head of human resources, says: 'We still feel it is the right offer in the current climate and in respect of the Working Time Directive."
