• Customs and Excise officers have seized nearly 40 vehicles after uncovering a red-diesel distribution racket based in South Wales.
Targeting premises in an area stretching from Bridgend to Newport and the South Wales valleys, officers seized 311 vehicles including cars, vans, coaches and a tanker and confiscated 70,000 litres of red diesel that was destined for commercial use.
They only made one arrest but recovered more than
£250,000 of duty that was owed on the illegal fuel. Customs officers swooped after following a tanker they suspected to be full of rebated fuel from another part of the country. This was part of a bigger investigation but
was not linked to the laundry found in Essex last month.
-Customs are determined to crack down hard on those who try to defraud the system, and we are very pleased with the results of this recent blitz," says spokeswoman Claire Morgans.
"The criminals involved in the distribution of illegal fuel have very little regard for the safety of the product they are carrying, nor do they care what the result may be for people using it in their vehicles," she adds.
