• Removing hard shoulders complel or introducing 'safe havens' on mot ways are two ideas being looked at by Transport Research Laboratory, whicl looking for ways to reduce the numbei accidents alongside high-speed dual c riageways and motorways.
The TRL, which also spearheaded research on the EU road safety proj FuroRAP, is looking into how hard sh( ders can be made safer—in partici how to stop vehicles drifting from nearside lane into the hard shoulder how to warn drivers that a vehicle I stopped on the hard shoulder.
The TRL will also be considering drr fatigue and technological initiatives st as lane guidance and collision-warr devices.
Transport Secretary Stephen By has already pledged to introduce expi mental 'safe havens' on the M42.
