SKILLS FOR Logistics is launching a driver training scheme in Scotland specifically for women.
The Sector Skills Council for the freight industry says that in Scotland only 2% of HGV drivers are women. It has already completed a pilot programme examining the female perception of truck driving and ways to recruit and retain female staff.
"Following a truly successful pilot project aimed at finding out why women are reluctant to join the industry and addressing those reasons. Skills for Logistics has created a training scheme that embraces the requirements of women," says Ian Hetherington,chiefexecutive,SkilLs for Logistics. -We are pleased to announce that an initial 40 places are available and look forward to seeing even more women driving HGVs in the future."
Scotland has one of the greatest driver shortages in the UK. In June there were 6,404 jobs available, up 18.2% from a year earlier.
