• Fears that hauliers may be getting away with carrying illegal loads in Newham, London, have been expressed by the local council. The warning comes after Newham's only public weighbridge was closed in July along with the lorry park where it was sited.
The 24-hour weighbridge was owned by Newham Council and could not be relocated because the only alternative sites available were on contaminated land.
Ray Sweeting, of the council's Trading Standards and Consumer Protection Division, estimates the cost of moving it would have been about £500,000. The council did not have the funds available to cover these costs and Sweeting worries that its effectiveness in catching illegal operators has now been reduced.
Newham Council says it is still looking for new sites and ways to raise funds for a new public weighbridge.
