by Bill Brock • The Vehicle Builders and Repairers Association is to establish a programme of new standards for its 200 members involved in CV building and repairing. All new members are vet
ted; now it is proposed that each member will be inspected in alternate years. The Freight Transport Association already carries out an audit of VBRA car repairers; a further 16 engineers will be trained to assess the services offered on the CV side.
The audit will emphasise the quality of work to encourage the training of employees and acquisition of specialist equipment.
Following trials, the feedback from members has been positive. Robin Sharpe, head of vehicle inspection services at the FTA, says: "I believe it will ensure end users of the highest standards in the industry today."
VBRA members are also
introducing bodywork inspections. The MoT inspection includes only a visual examination of body attachment points and running gear: the VBRA and some major users consider this to be inadequate, especially for trailers. It is proposed that the service will be offered by every CV member on all makes of bodies.
A comprehensive VBRA
directory of specialist CV bodybuilder and repairers is being prepared as a printed booklet and on computer disc.
The VBRA will introduce a new charter to govern the conduct of its CV members and ensure consistency of repairs and service.
VBRA managing director Ron Nicholson says: "This combined programme will include repair guarantees and bespoke options for specialist manufacturers. It is becoming more important for the end user to be able to recognise repairers who work to the highest standards in our industry."
