The anonymous writer of the letter head! I "realistic speeds" in CM (27 November-3 December) wrote in emotive terms of impositions from Brussels.
The only speed limit "imposed by Brussels" stems from Directive 92/6/EEC requiring trucks to be fitted with speed limiters preventing speeds above 90km/h.
This Directive was passed on the twin grounds of road safety and environmental problems, and not simply to have fuel say
ings (though I wonder why your correspondent is so scornful of this as a justification in itself).
Furthermore, I know not where the mysterious reference of speed limits being "soon to be 80km/h" comes from, but I can assure you the European Commission has no plans to change the speed limiter requirements in any way.
