Ling is made up of 28 family run haulage firms that, between them, can offer full UK coverage, including the far-flung parts of Scotland. They run a combined fleet of 2,500 trucks and 3,500 trailers which run out of 50 depots. Taken together the firms involved have a combined turnover of more than £250m.
There are plans to run Continental seNices and the consortium can offer a railfreight service if the need arises.
Firms wanting to join the alliance must first join the Transport Association: Sturman reveals that there have already been approaches regarding Ling from two notable English operators and one from Northern Ireland.
Member firms then have to buy £10,000 worth of shares in Ling, which means at the moment it has a fighting fund of £280,000 with an option to call on the same amount again.
