NEXT YEAR WE'LL finally see the introduction of the Graduated Fixed Penalty and Deposit Scheme.
The regulation is designed to help Vosa and the police make foreign drivers pay a fine on the spot if they found to be breaking the law. This is great news, but rumours are circulating among drivers in Wales that it won't be a deterrent for foreign truckers.
Instead, I'm hearing that drivers will be given a cash kitty in order to cover any fines they may pick up while travelling in the UK — all well and good.
But, apparently, some foreign operators are setting up schemes so those drivers who return with the most cash will benefit. In my opinion, this seems like a somewhat irresponsible approach.
Is it too much to ask for these foreign operators just to get their trucks up to an acceptable standard and ensure their drivers stick to the hours rules, rather than trying to get away with as many offences as they can?
