A senior Ryder truck rental executive on a flying visit to the UK this week had a nice tale to tell about a hire driver who was given charge of one of Ryder's US rental vehicles fitted with a cut-out which stopped the engine if oil pressure or water temperature reached danger levels. To comply with the law it had a manual over-ride.
Back came the man after his hire period, holding the over-ride control out with one hand, steering with the other and exploding: "Strangest goddam truck I ever drove!"
The engine was wrecked.
