A DISTRICT Council operating buses, or a Passenger Transport Executive, would both have the power to veto applications for road service licences from the National Bus Company or private operators, if a Bill due for its second reading on February 18 becomes law.
Under the provisions of the Road Traffic Act 1960 (Amendment) Bill introduced by Tom Bradley •MP, the council, or executive cannot refuse its consent to an applii cation, unless it is satisfied that it provides, or will provide, a suitable alternative service.
In case of dispute, the traffic commissioners will have the power to decide.
The Bill applies to routes that are either entirely within district or executive areas, or which operate from within the area and partly within five miles of the boundary. The Bill will enable executives and districts which operate buses to serve all the residents of their areas should they so wish.
