ADWest Country van thief put his foot in it after ramming a police car to make his getaway. The villain wrote off WPC Phillipa Beldham's Ford Mondeo near Exeter, then leapt out and legged it across a muddy field. Fortunately the police officer and her co-driver Richard Groom were unhurt.
They were able to rescue a major clue—the thief's sizenine trainers which became stuck in the mud as he ran. Now the forensic boffins are trying to make a DNA match From the sweat inside the shoes to track down the raider, described as "short, fat and bearded".
And nursing a few blisters too, no doubt.
