Mr. R. G. Crowther and Mr. Henry Walker are Concerned in Purchases from B.R.S.
'TWO leaders of the Road Haulage 1Association figure among the latest purchasers of transport units. One is Mr. R. G. Crowther, a national vicechairman of the Association, who is connected with F. Crowther and Son (Wakefield), Ltd, The company have bought 11 vehicles and assigned seven.
Crowther's bought two other vehicles from British Road Services not long ago. The four which they have retained out of their latest purchase brings their fleet to 36 vehicles. These include eight which, designated as approved vehicles earmarked for nationalization, were permitted to continue on long-distance work notwithstanding the 25-mile limit. The company have been in the road haulage business since last century and began to use motors in 1920.
Eight 6-8-ton vehicles have also been acquired by Layfield Transport Services, Ltd., with whom Mr. Henry Walker, former chairman of the Northern Area of the R.H.A., is connected.

YORKSHIRE Baldry's, Ltd., fruit, carrot and potato merchants, have purchased 10 vehicles from the Hull depot of B.R.S. and assigned them to Baldry's (Haulage), Ltd., North Newbold, York. The vehicles comprise two Atkinson 12-tonners, three E.R.F. , two Albion, a Dodge, a Proctor and a Thomy crof t. It is intended to acquire another 15 vehicles from B.RS. to add to the fleet of 52 vehicles, which includes 12 limespreaders. Daily services are run from Hull to Glasgow and Lancashire.

• WEST MIDLANDS
Special A licences have been granted to Bassett's Roadways, Tittensor, for five vehicles (334 tons) and Modern Transport (Wolverhampton), Ltd., 8 Peel Street, Wolverhampton. for four vehicles (16 tons). Bassett's formerly comprised the businesses of Messrs. L. J. Bassett and Grayswood Transport. The Bassett section was nationalized in 1949„ but Grayswood have been operating within the 25-mile limit. Now reconstituted as Bassett's Roadways with the same directors, these operators have seven Fodeas, six Bedfords and an E.R.F.
C. R, Lyckyer, Ltd., 41 Howse!! Road, Malvern, have bought units 1094 and 1096 (38 Edgar Street, Hereford ,) comprising seven Proctor 6-tonners. Thc company have been operating as B-licensees and intend to provide long-distance services.
Messrs. A. H. Adams and Sons, 65-67 Great Bridge, Tipton, Staffs, hope to take over two vehicles from British Road n27
Services at the end of this month for longdistance work. At present they have eight vehicles running within 25 miles.
EAST MIDLANDS
As reported last week, Mr. D. N. Holloway (North Lines Haulage), Waltham Hall, Waltham. Grimsby, has acquired three vehicles. They are Vulcan 7-tanners. In addition, be has bought a Vulcan 7-tonner and an Albion 8-tonner. General haulage to London, the Midlands, the north-west and Scotland is being undertaken. Mr. Holloway has a substantial number of tippers and there is a small B-licence fleet engaged on agricultural work. The acquired vehicles arc running well after a few teething troubles.
EASTERN COUNTIES Messrs. J. S. Briggs and Son, Bridge Works, Thorney, Peterborough, have been granted a special A licence for one vehicle of 3 tons unladen and an articulated outfit of 41 tons. Grange Bros., Ltd., Wells, Norfolk, have assigned two vehicles (6 tons) to Sculthorpe Agricultural Services, Ltd., Sculthorpc. Mr. P. C. Death, Slough Farm, Lavenham, has assigned two vehicles (6 tons) to Mr. W. F. J. Eamon. one (31 tons) to Mr. J. R. Gibson, and one (3 tons) to Mr. E. Murkin, Nether gate Street, Clare.
SOUTH WALES Special A licences have recently been granted to Mr. W. W. Whiting, Pantrhiwgoch Garage, Llanwenarth Citra. Mon, for three vehicles (91 tons); Mr. E. A. G. Elliott, Transport Garage, Union Street, Newport, eight (25} tons); Messrs. John Evans and Sons, Ala Garage, Pontyberern, two (7 tons); and Mr. F. G. Hoppe, 158 Mumbles Road. Blackpill. Swansea. two (11tons), Mr. Elliott, a director of Elliott's Transport (Newport), Ltd.,. has acquired four Dodge 7-tonners, two Commer 7-tormers. and two Austin 5-tanners, also a garage. Services are run to London, Manchester and the Midlands.
SOUTHERN AREA
Special A licences have been granted by the South-Eastern Licensing Authority to Messrs. W. C. Amey and Son, Besselsleigh Road, Abingdon, for eight vehicles (261 tons): Messrs. R. and H. Smith, The Wharf, Mill Street, Wantage, one (21 tons); E. E. Witchard, Ltd., The Dean, Alresford, three (111 tons); Percy and Son (Meonstoke), Ltd., Bottings Hotel, Curdridge, two (11 tons); Itchen Transport Co., Ltd., Town Quay, Southampton, two (6 tons); H. Webb and Sons (Marchwood), Ltd., Bottings Hotel, Curdridge, one (3 tons); Messrs. S. B. Carey, 67 Wrestwood Road, Bexhill three (81 tons); and Messrs. Ernest West, 118 Station Road, Burgess Hill, two (61 tons). Percy and Son and H. Webb and Sons are members of The Hill Group. As reported in The Commercial Motor on May 28, Mr. J. A. Hill has recently bought 11 vehicles.
Messrs. West's vehicles are a Leyland and a Vulcan 6-tanner. They will be used mainly on services between the south coast and London.
The eight vehicles of Messrs. Amey mentioned above are additional to the purchase
of two others. The vehicles, all dropsiders, arc of Bedford and E.R.F. manufacture with capacities of 6-8-tons. The firm run a daily service between Oxford and London, these places tieing linked with the north by a twice-weekly service. Other districts are served as required.
LONDON AND HOME COUNTIES Mr. J. M. Silverman, London. N.W.2. has bought a low-loader based at Glasgow. It is his second purchase.
