DON'T ban the lorry—improve the roads ! This message has gone out from the Freight Transport Association to Strathclyde Regional Council which is proposing an 8-tonne and 8ft-wide restriction on vehicles on the Island of Mull.
The FTA said that "to obtain the maximum benefit from ro-ro ferries it is essential that roads can at least modestly accommodate the size of goods vehicle needed to service the Island economy."
And the Association has pointed out that the problem of Island communications is not a new one, public bodies have often advocated the need for improvements. Strathclyde has been warned that even the introduction of short-term restrictive measures could frustrate the rapid progression to improved communications. The Association is seeking discussions with the council on the need for comprehensive improvements to the road system.
