HUNDREDS of overweight lorries are illegally landing at British ports every day, it was claimed this week.
And Mr Jack Stokoe, Kent County Council consumer protection officer, warned that the authorities are so hard pressed that they are almost powerless to stop the "heavy mob."
Mr Stokoe told CM that last year his inspectors, together with the police and Department of Environment, managed only to check well under one per cent of the vehicles, both British as well as foreign, coming into the country via Kent's ports.
Of the 3,100 vehicles that were weighed—out of 14,000 inspected—more than 1,000 were overweight. "And we are nowhere near weighing enough trucks."
