FURTHER to the report commissioned from Bristol Polytechnic into the stability problems of large artics, published in December 1981, your readers may be interested to learn that this research project has now been widened to include references to all types of tippers and is being funded by the Health and Safety Executive.
A modest programme of fullscale engineering trials is being instituted to determine the adequacy of the structural design of tipping vehicles currently in use. Of particular interest are the effects on stability from chassis/body stiffness, suspension type, whether leaf, air or rubber springs make significant differences to stability and especially the relative merits between twin tyres and the new "super singles".
I would be very pleased to receive comments from any interested parties, especially if they have access to results of actual tests.
