• The TUC is planning an 18-month investigation into the safety of Britain's fleet vehicles, to examine why some companies' safety records are so much better than others.
The aim of the investigation, says Peter Jacques, head of insurance and individual welfare at the TUC, is to produce a set of recommended safety procedures for fleet operators.
Jacques says that although the project has only just begun, he has already come across a number of companies with very good safety procedures — but more worrying there have also been several companies with very poor procedures and awful accident records.
The TUC will be asking its unions to identify companies which have good safety procedures. These companies will then be asked to provide the TUC with information about their safety procedures, and there will also be visits to firms with good safety records.
Jacques says the TUC will, given permission, publish the names of those companies with good fleet safety procedures which are identified during the investigation.
