league • UK roads are the safest in Europe, according to the latest European Union statistics—but avoid Portugal and Greece.
With an EU average of 119 deaths per million people in 1995, the UK comes in with just 64 deaths, followed closely by Sweden at 65.
Some observers point out that the UK's comparatively low figure might be due to congestion and difficult conditions reducing average traffic speed.
Top of the EU road danger league is Portugal, with 217 deaths per million; and Greece, with 195.
Eurostat, the EU's statistical office, reveals that the UK death rate has fallen by 30% since 1989, compared with an average reduction of just 14% among the 15 EU member states.
The safest region in the UK, in terms of road deaths per million population, is London, with 30 deaths per million.
By way of contrast, Sterea Ellada in Greece is the EU blackspot, with a figure of 2,958 per million.
