an impassioned plea for the Government's White Paper to take a radical approach to reducing Britain's reliance on road transport. A survey by the British Chambers of Commerce found that road congestion is a problem for 87% of UK firms. More than half have suffered increased costs and been forced to raise prices, while a third have lost business as a result.
But nearly 90% of businesses use the road network to transport goods.
The survey says: "Largescale investment, the integration of different modes of transport and a reduction in the extent to which business depends on the road system are essential."
It recommends road pricing, moving freight from road to rail, water and air, and the prioritisation of specific transport projects, including the Birmingham Northern Relief Road.
