Off in push for eco-driving to be included in Driver CPC training
THE DEPARTMENT FOR Transport (DfT) has unveiled proposals to make economical and environmentally friendly driving a compulsory part of the Driver CPC, in order to cut CO2 emissions by three million tonnes over a five-year period.
Transport under-secretary Paul Clark confirms that the government is calling for 90% of lorry drivers to receive eco-driver training as part of their Driver CPC.
He says: "We are absolutely committed to reducing emissions from across the transport sector. Given that 20% of all transport emissions come from road freight, these drivers must be a priority."
Eco-driver training is already a voluntary, eligible course for periodic training in the Driver CPC syllabus, but the DfT reveales that take-up has been limited so far.
According to the DfT, fuel costs could be cut by £300m for the industry every year if the proposals get the go-ahead.
The consultation will run until 30 June and can be accessed at http://bitly/9dYVtl.
