AIR. R. E. PATERSON, the solicitor in who has dealt with licensing applications for members of the Hull Area of the Road Haulage Association for many years, has resigned and it is understood that the Area Licensing Scheme is to be discontinued from January 1.
Mr. Paterson had to put forward all members' applications regardless of the opposition or the suitability of the evidenee. The activities of a number of important members in objecting to practically every application for additional vehicles on the grounds that there was already a surplus in the area, has been the cause of considerable embarrassment. The payment out of the Licensing Fund for legal representation for the, objectors has caused ill-feeling among many members, particularly as the fees were much higher than paid to their own solicitor. They considered that they were paying subscriptions to assist in cutting their own throats.
Following a meeting of the Area Licensing Committee, at which Mr. Paterson tendered his resignation, it was unanimously decided to recommend the closure of the scheme and members will in future arrange their own representation. The legal defence scheme will not
be affected. •
