A ST. HELENS bus conductor was 1-1 assaulted by a man with a broken bottle late last Saturday, and his face was badly disfigured. But for the quick action of the driver, his injuries might have been much worse. Unprovoked attacks of this nature are now occurring about once a week, Mr. Austin Hogan, secretary of the St. Helens branch of the Transport and General Workers' Union, told The Commercial Motor, This sort of thing caused considerable tension among the transport staff, and many of them were reluctant to work late at night. especially the women, who formed nearly two-thirds of St. Helens conductors.
He continued, saying: "If there is another assault, we shall approach the management to suggest that buses arc not run after 10 p.m." The staff realized that this meant a loss of overtime, but safety came first and, if necessary, strong measures would be Laken.

The space on the first floor will allow a big increase in the stock of new vehicles, so helping to keep delivery delays to a minimum.
LEYLAND BUS ORDERS
RECENT orders for Leyland-passenger JA vehicles include eight Titan PD2.40 27-ft. 6-in.-long double-deckers for Southport Corporation. These will have Weymann forward-entrance bodies. Jersey Motor Transport Co., Ltd., have ordered _five special Tiger Cub PSUCL5 underfloor-engined chassis with shortened rear overhangs to give an overall length of 27 ft. 6 in. Massey Brothers (Pemberton). Ltd., Wigan, are to build the 40-seat bodies.
Another Atlantean rear-cngi ned chassis has been ordered by City of Plymouth Transport to add to the existing fleet of 12 Atlanteans. The bus will have an M.C.W. 77-seat body.
DUNLOP'S E70,000 GIFT
DUNLOP RUBBER CO., LTD., have entered into a Deed of Covenant to pay £10.000 a year for seven years to Birmingham University. The gift is in answer to an appeal from the university who are planning to raise £1.638,250 for the building of new Halls of Residence.
