A RTICULATED lorries are to be 1-'k banned from several main roads in Gloucestershire when the routes crossing the Cotswolds become icy or snowbound this winter. Gloucestershire police say that the ,measure will help to ensure smooth traffic flow and make for safety during bad weather. A police spokesman said experience had shown that in icy weather articulated vehicles were prone to skid and jack-knife, causing severe hold-ups to other traffic. As soon as the roads have been gritted and made
safe the lorries will be allowed to continue their journeys.. It is not intended to hold them up overnight unless this is imperative.
Mr, J. W. Chapple, traffic manager for G. L. Baker, of Bristol, said: "I've never heard anything like it. It's plain stupid. Artics can jack-knife, but not in the right hands."
Mr. R. Sparks, of Western Traffic. Ltd., of Yatton, said: "A ban will hit us very hard. Costs may go up and customers may not get such a good service."
