by Karen Miles • Five-year-old trucks are emerging as the thieves' favourite target and should be put under special guard by their owners, the police advised hauliers last week.
The warning came as South Humberside police revealed that it has made further arrests connected with truck theft in the North-East. More than 35 missing trucks have been discovered through the latest investigations.
Detective chief inspector Bob Kirk of South Humberside police believes E and E-registration trucks are most at risk because security on newer trucks is better and more questions are raised over the origins of new truck parts.
The latest arrests of seven people centre on two South Humberside yards run by travellers. Police believe the travellers were dismantling stolen vehicles for export to the Third World. Charges are expected to be brought around mid-December.
A Lancashire dealer of secondhand trucks had been buying the goods from the yards and sending them to Africa and Malaysia. However, police think he was not aware of the trucks' origin.
South Humberside police have already charged nine people for offences involving the alleged theft of LGIls, or conspiracy involving alleged theft.
Some of the nine had been working for haulage firms based in South Ilumberside and South Yorkshire.
