MORE TRUCKS and trailers passed through UK ports in 2006 than 2005, even though the total amount of freight carried fell, according to the Department for Transport (DM.
The DfT's maritime statistics for 2006, published last week (4 October),show that the number of trucks and unaccompanied trailers passing through UK ports was up 6% in 2006. to 380,000 vehicles.
This contrasted with a fall in total tonnage handled by UK ports from 585 million tonnes in 2005 to 584 million tonnes in 2006. The leading RO-RO port remains Dover, which handled 2.3 million road goods vehicles in 2006.14% upon 2005.
The five largest freight handling ports overall were Grimsby and Immingham (64 million tonnes). Tees and Hartlepool (53.3 million tonnes), London (51.9 million tonnes)South.ampton (40.6 million tonnes) and Milford Haven (34.3 million tonnes).
The DfT's statistics are compiled from quarterly returns by shipping lines and agents of traffic handled at the major ports.
