THE DEPARTMENT for Transport has asked Network Rail to conduct a feasibility study into making Manchester Piccadilly railway station a freight superhub.
The study comes after three northern regional development agencies, collectively known as Northern Vvsaid they wanted to develop the freight huh to improve the "connectivityof the North.
Transport Minister Rosie Winterton says: "I want to pursue the idea of a Manchester hub as a priority, to help unlock more of the region's economic power. This Network Rail study will give us more details on how and when this could be done, what infrastructure will be required, and at what cost."
David Begg, chair of the Northern Way's transport committee, says: "[The] Manchester hub stands out as the single most important capacity constraint across the North as a whole.
