THE FREIGHT Transport Association has complained to the Department of Transport about proposals to increase heavy goods vehicle testing fees at relatively short notice.
The DTp wants the motor vehicle test fee increased from £16.50 to £21, a rise of 27.3 per cent; trailers' fees to rise from 'to £11 (22.2 per cent); and for there to be 20 to 25 per cent increases in the fees for retests and notifiable alterations.
These proposals are intended to keep the service self-financing, and are not connected with the proposed sale of the test stations to Lloyd's Register. It is possible that another rise could follow the sale of the stations.
The FTA has written protesting that the DTp only gave it 28 days in which to consult with its members on their views about the increase, and for failing to provide it with satisfactory evidence to justify the increase on the present rates which have applied since November 1981.
